THE local assembly of the Mazda CX-30 Crossover has finally been fulfilled now that the pandemic is over. The three-year delay was unexpected due to the Covid-19 virus scourge disrupting the production chain, from parts manufacture and sourcing to vehicle assembly.
Now that it has arrived, Bermaz Auto Berhad is painting the town red with four model variants to tempt buyers who had waited patiently for the CX-30 CKD model. These are the 2.0L, 2.0High, 2.0L High+ and 2.0L High+ Premium. Prices on the road without insurance range from RM128,109 for the 2.0L Standard to RM156,109 for the 2.0L High+ Premium. All are two-wheel drive models.
It is said that many customers among the overhang of orders from last year had opted for the latest CKD models as they are ‘substantially’ cheaper than the CBU or imported range. The assembly of these cars are made at a dedicated section of the Inokom car assembly factory in Kulim, Kedah with the common area being the body paint section.
However, the customer who pays an additional premium for a special paintwork (three colour options including the highly popular red) has the body paintwork done in a dedicated section for Mazda vehicles only. The quality of assembly is carefully maintained to Mazda standards and 40 per cent of the vehicle parts in value is locally sourced.
Mazda Malaysia says it has installed similar processes and quality control steps mirroring that for Mazda vehicles manufactured in Japan. The Mazda ‘plant within a plant’ also features an upgraded automated body line and ‘state-of-the-art’ premium paint facility. As it is the only car company exporting Mazda vehicles to the Asean region, quality assembly is a key factor in the vehicles being fully accepted.
Mazda Malaysia exports about 30 per cent of the Mazda vehicles assembled in Kulim, Kedah to Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Cambodia and Laos. For now, the Mazda CX-30 CKD is targeted at fulfilling the back orders, as well as new ones, in the Malaysian market.
The body styling of the Mazda CX-30 continues to excite with its sporty sleekness that belies its triumph in the 2020 Red Dot Design for the Passenger Car category. Based on the ‘Charge and Release’ design language used in Japanese calligraphy, its styling is said to portray a sense of strong forward motion in measuring up to Mazda’s Kodo – Soul of Motion design philosophy.
The ‘refined and comfortable’ interior features an 8.8-inch infotainment display on the centre dash area, which offers ‘simplified’ operation via the Commander Control Knob on the centre console. This infotainment system allows one to connect to Apple Carplay and Android Auto, and is complemented with a three-way audio system and eight-speaker configuration with 3L woofers to provide an ‘immersive audio experience’ for all on board.
Powering all the CX-30 variants is the four-cylinder Skyactiv-G 2.0-litre (1998cc) engine delivering 119kW (162hp) at 6000rpm and 213Nm at 4000rpm. Transferring engine output to the front wheels is a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Mazda says it has a top speed of 196km/h and an average fuel consumption of 6.4L/100km (15.6km/l). - LPS
